Designing and planning of Ethiopia's biomass-to-biofuel supply chain through integrated strategic-tactical optimization model considering economic dimension

Despite biofuels’ significance in substituting petroleum products the transportation sector, many countries, including Ethiopia, have not taken advantage of their biomass resources potential to develop biofuel. This is attributed several challenges, which economic unattractiveness, especially requirement excessively high initial investment costs, major one. To address this challenge, a quantitative-based design and planning biomass-to-biofuel supply chain (BBSC), backed by optimization, compulsory. Henceforth, study intends an optimization model that seeks maximize profit minimize cost BBSC. The applied real case Ethiopia's BBSC provide support tool for policy-makers over 20-year horizon. Although models developed so far, contribution broadens preceding research endeavors considering following efforts simultaneously. An integrated strategic-tactical level prevent non-optimal infeasible results, might arise from separate models. Adverse multi-product produces bioethanol biodiesel with associated co-products comprehensive chain, incorporates decentralized preprocessing unit, along other relevant components, considered. decisions related location, technology, capacity facilities happen on yearly basis, unlike studies consider decision only at beginning period. size boosts as it national-level study. Therefore, new approach proposed here analyze compromise between objectives justifiable computational time efficient resolution. A sensitivity analysis also carried out purchase price availability, well biofuel demand selling price.
